ANU has now released a set of FAQs for staff on how we’re responding to the emergence of generative AI tools, including ChatGPT. The FAQs document Chat GPT and other generative AI tools: What ANU academics need to know (PDF) covers the following topics:
- Introduction to ChatGPT, including some of its possibilities for supporting learning and known limitations
- Potential impact of ChatGPT on assessment design and academic integrity
- Action ANU is taking in developing a position on the use of AI tools
- What steps course conveners can take
- Links to further reading and useful sources of information.
What’s next?
The FAQs are a first step created in time for the start of Semester 1 2023. The FAQs will be followed by more detailed advice on policy, plus tips and examples of good assessment practice. The Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) is keen to hear from academics who would like to share how they are using AI tools in their teaching or who may be planning to redesign assessment tasks. Please email us at clt@anu.edu.au.
Minor changes to a range of relevant governance documents and academic integrity guidance for students are also being considered. Once approved, these changes are likely to require students to acknowledge any use of artificial intelligence in their work. ANU is also developing communications for students on the responsible and ethical use of AI in their learning activities and assessments – an important step in preparing students for a future workplace where AI tools will be ubiquitous. This PowerPoint Slidedeck has been released for Semester 1 for staff and student distribution.
Catch up on the recent ANU roundtable session
In February CLT hosted a roundtable discussion where we heard from senior leaders Professor Maryanne Dever and Professor Royston Gustavson about the approach ANU is taking. Three teaching academics – Dr Nici Sweaney, Dr Ben Swift and Associate Professor Alex Potanin – also shared their own views and experiences. View the recording below:
Dr Nici Sweaney and Dr Ben Swift have also previously published some ideas our blog and on THE Campus:
- Assessment in the face of AI – the game has changed – Dr Nici Sweaney
- So, you want to use ChatGPT in the classroom this semester? – Dr Ben Swift
