A new space to develop multimedia education content

The Education Design Studio (EDS) Team and Multimedia Education are collaborating to provide ANU educators/staff multimedia and studio facilities. The fruit of this collaboration is the Baldessin Education Studio located in Baldessin Precinct Building – launched in late 2024.

The studio contains two areas and a range of specialised multimedia gear for the creation of educational multimedia content. Open to all teaching and general staff, the studio is supported by dedicated multimedia and education support colleagues who induct users into the studio and are on hand to support education content production.

Content created in this studio can be wide-ranging. For example, teaching staff can record a course welcome video to be added to their new course site, film an interview with an expert to be shown during their course or self-record an entire lecture for a flipped classroom approach. Non-teaching staff can record training videos using screen capture or an overview of the services their area offers delivered as a short piece-to-camera with powerpoint slides. The studio can also be used for professional presentations, for example a pre-record video showcasing ANU research or the results of a project and also for participating in (or hosting) an online conference or seminar

How to use the Self-Recording Studio?

The Self-Recording Studio is designed for independent use. We provide a step-by-step guide to help you through your first session, and recommend bookmarking this page for future reference.

Preparing for Your First Studio Session

Here’s what to expect and how to prepare for your first recording session in the Self-Recording Studio:

1. Prepare Your Content

Please ensure you are well-prepared before your session. Bring all necessary materials, including:

• Notes or scripts

• Slides and images you plan to show

• Printed materials (for use with the document camera, if needed)

2. Gaining Access to the Studio

The studio door remains locked during business hours. If you arrive early, feel free to wait in the tea room next to the studio. A team member will come to let you in.

For returning/experienced users, we will give you the code of the key box, so you can use the studio by yourself.

3. Saving Your Recording

You can bring a USB drive to copy your video after recording. Alternatively, you can upload the file directly to OneDrive from the studio computer.

4. Using the Recording System

Recordings are made using OBS on the studio computer. Here’s how to get started:

1. Log in to the computer using your ANU credentials.
2. Open File Explorer and navigate to E:\OBS Settings.
3. Double-click Copy OBS Settings.bat to load your configuration.
(Note: This step is only required the first time you use the software. Your settings will be saved under your login.)
4. Launch OBS Studio from the desktop.
5. Choose your preferred scene layout.
6. Check your video/audio settings — occasionally, Windows updates may affect them.
Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with OBS—we’ll guide you through the process during your first session.

5. Practice Makes Perfect

Even if you’re confident with video recording, we recommend doing one or two short test runs to get comfortable with the setup and confirm everything is working properly.

6. During Your Recording

When you’re ready, press the “Record” button in OBS to start. A staff member can stay with you or wait just outside the studio—whichever you prefer.

7. After Your Recording

Once you’ve finished:

• Save your recording to your USB or upload it to your cloud storage.

• Log out from the computer.

• Gather your belongings.

• Return the key to the designated key box.

No prior experience is required—we’ll be there to help with setup, troubleshooting, and any questions you may have. If you’d like additional support for future sessions, just let us know.
