When there are courses with hundreds of students learning online and decreasing resources to support them, how can I provide them with a rewarding experience? Personal videos are one way you can quickly and easily be more present and visible in your course.

We launched the “Welcome Video” service across the whole of ANU in 2021, and conveners were assisted in crafting a short video message to their students. Currently, this service is open to all ANU academics, tutors and professional staff who want to create short, scripted “talking head” style videos. In last few years there was a great response from across campus with many conveners taking up the offer of filming on campus, and many others filming their own at home or in their office set up.

How do I start?

Here are the steps:

  1. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of a welcome video, please familiarise yourself with it. You can view example videos or read blog posts below.
  2. Write your script using the template.
  3. Submit your script.
  4. Book a 30-minute session to record with help from multimedia staff (and a teleprompter.

Your friendly multimedia team will then take care of the rest: editing, graphics, transcripts & uploading. The final video can be embedded in your LMS Site and on the Programs and Courses page – AND – you can share it on any other college-specific channels, newsletters and social media.

Can’t come in to campus? You can record your video yourself and sending it to multimedia staff for editing.
