Students need to come up with a list of pros and cons for an idea provided by the educator.
Instructions
- On a whiteboard, draw a two-column grid with one column labelled ‘Pros’ and the other labelled ‘Cons’.
- Provide students with a topic or statement that has both advantages and disadvantages and ask students to think of a certain number of both.
- Provide students 5-10 minutes to think and note down their points.
- Returning to the large class group, ask students to volunteer their points and record them down in the appropriate columns on the board visible to the class.
- Combine similar points and keep a tally of their frequency to show their perceived importance.
Resources
Topic or statement.
Variations
- Make it a group activity: Ask students to form pairs or a group and come up with pros and cons together.
- Make it a pre-session activity: Provide the topic to students ahead of the class and ask them to come with a prepared list of pros and cons. The class session can be used for whole class discussion.
