The date 29 May marked the completion of the Advancing Learning and Teaching (ALT) program for Semester 1 participants. The program aimed to equip academics, course conveners and program leaders with the tools, skills and knowledge to enhance their courses and invigorate learning through innovative practice and diverse, research-led approaches.

The program ran across six weekly sessions to explore six core themes:

  • learning and teaching in Higher Education
  • learning theories and models
  • course design
  • student engagement and academic care
  • assessment for learning, and
  • improving professional practice.

Each module was designed to provide comprehensive understanding of the topic and its practical application. Complementing these was the inclusion of special, topical workshops, delivered by guest facilitators who could share their knowledge, insight and experience in their respective spaces.

This wealth of content and experience was key to the success of the program, which was evident in the high level of active engagement by participants in the activities. Feedback was very positive with a strong appreciation of the practicality of the program and the opportunity to learn from others.

“I have been very fortunate to take the ALT program. In my view, the most valuable aspect … is that you are taught using the very same tools that are fostered to improve your professional teaching practices, making every concept more concrete.”

Overall, the completion of the ALT Program over these six weeks has been a rewarding journey. As a co-facilitator, it was a privilege to be a part of this transformational process for all involved. This success also reaffirms the importance of continuous learning and development, and I hope that participants will be able to apply their ALT experience to the further enhancement of their own courses and programs and to learning and teaching at ANU as a whole.

The program is one of a suite of professional development opportunities offered by the Professional Learning team at CLT. In Semester 1, the team also delivered its two other flagship programs – Exploring Learning and Teaching (ELT) and Leading Learning and Teaching (LLT) – to great success; and new offerings are coming in Semester 2. Any interest in these or other professional learning opportunities can be sent directly to CLT.
