The Muddiest Point activity involves students identifying a specific part of the content they need help understanding and sharing this with the educator.
Instructions
- Give students time to reflect and note down any specific areas of confusion. Discourage general statements such as “I didn’t understand any of it”.
- Get some students to share their “muddiest points” with the class. Both the educator and other students can respond with explanations, examples, or additional resources to aid understanding.
Tip
This activity may be especially useful in the lead-up to assessments, e.g. in a revision class.

Variations
- Use online tools: Utilise an online discussion forum or platform where students can post their muddiest points and engage in asynchronous discussions. Alternatively, use a tool such as PollEverywhere to display the results in real-time so that areas of common confusion are immediately evident.
