Citation: For inspiring student engagement in agriculture through innovative and distinctive transdisciplinary programs built on authentic experiences, industry partnerships and work-integrated learning
Synopsis
Dr Rachael Rodney has developed a unique curriculum model for the ANU Agricultural Innovation Program, reimagining how agriculture is taught by embedding it across the university. This highlights agriculture’s critical role in food security, climate change, biodiversity, health, and sustainability and the need to attract different graduates who can work across disciplines to address these challenges.
The inclusive model challenges traditional views of agriculture, opening new career paths. It emphasises work-integrated learning, engaging students from a range of disciplines through industry projects, case studies, internships, and scholarships. Students can engage via individual courses and activities or complete the suite of core course that underpin an Agricultural Innovation major, specialisation or masters. This collection of initiatives connects students with real-world challenges and builds lasting partnerships with industry and government.
The program design is informed by Rachael’s own research into future skills and training. In addition to curriculum leadership Rachael is an exceptional, creative teacher. Her convenorship of Agricultural Systems (ENVS2024/6224) exemplifies authentic, industry-connected learning through fieldwork, inquiry-based workshops, and creative assessments. The program has a profound impact on student engagement and outcomes, fostering curiosity and offering opportunities for students that would not otherwise exist.
