Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence: Eglantine Staunton

Dr Eglantine Staunton

Highly Commended, Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence

College of Asia and the Pacific

Synopsis

Dr Eglantine Staunton is an award-winning, innovative and caring educator in Peace and Conflict Studies and a leader in curriculum and program design. Through her teaching of mass atrocity and conflict prevention, she helps students understand, but also care, about the world they live in, and think about the role they want to play in it. She then provides them with the knowledge and skills necessary to do so.

To achieve this, Eglantine has developed an innovative multi-faceted approach to teaching that aims to support students’ various backgrounds and needs, and empower and stimulate them via exchange and the exposure to a variety of ac vi es, learning supports and assessments. Her teaching approach indeed uses advanced methods such as scenarios and case studies, and skilfully transforms complex and emotionally challenging content into approachable and meaningful learning experiences. This approach has allowed Eglantine’s teaching practice to be research-led, while putting students at the centre of the learning process, and linking student education and employability.

In addition to being recognised as an innovative and inspiring educator through three awards, outstanding SELTs and peer-review feedback, Eglantine has made key contributions beyond her courses through her leadership in curriculum and program design. In particular, she spearheaded in 2023 the creation of a new Master of Peace and Conflict Studies to fill a gap in ANU’s offering. Her contributions demonstrate consistent excellence, reflective practice, and institutional impact, making her a deserving candidate for the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
