The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Supervision: Brett Scholz

A/Prof. Brett Scholz

ANU College of Science and Medicine

Synopsis

Associate Professor Bret Scholz is dedicated to supporting and developing research students as critical health researchers and advocates for more inclusive health systems. Since 2013, he has successfully supervised more than 60 PhD, Master’s, Honours, medical students, and research interns across health and related disciplines.

Under his guidance, students undertake research that ensures patients’ experiential expertise is recognised and valued in health system decision-making. While often challenging for clinicians and health professionals, this cutting-edge, interdisciplinary work contributes to transforming community wellbeing.

A/Prof. Scholz’s supervision model is built on mutual trust and a strong commitment to the supervisory relationship. He fosters capacity building by creating a collaborative lab environment where students support one another, develop leadership, and refine research skills to engage meaningfully with patients and health stakeholders. His emphasis on rigour, ethics, and impact is evident in the opportunities he provides for students to co-produce and co-author research alongside patients and other health system partners.

The outcomes of this approach are significant: his students have benefited greatly from his mentorship, collectively leading or co-authoring more than 80 publications on lived experience leadership.
