2024 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Teaching Excellence: Professor Ben Corry

Professor Ben Corry

ANU College of Science and Medicine

Synopsis

Is it possible to explore the inner workings of a cell while playing games and solving puzzles? Can you explain the generation of nerve impulses in a way even a kindergarten child would understand? Ben not only believes this is possible, but demonstrates how such activities enhance student engagement and foster critical thinking skills.

Since 2013, Ben has taught more than 2,000 students, convening and lecturing in BIOL2174 Cell Physiology in Health and Disease, as well as contributing lectures to courses such as BIOL3107 Advances in Medical and Plant Biochemistryand CHEM3208 Molecular Modelling and Computational Chemistry. In the large BIOL2174 class (often exceeding 180 students), he has developed a range of interactive teaching strategies that make learning curiosity-driven, research-led, and fun.

His approach provides students with authentic experiences that place their learning in real-world context, allowing them to think and act like scientists while developing communication and problem-solving skills alongside discipline-specific knowledge. Through iterative reflection, refinement, and innovation, his teaching practices have produced highly satisfied and motivated students with diverse skill sets—and have influenced teaching approaches across the department.
