Synopsis

As First-Year Coordinator at the Mathematical Sciences Institute, Dr Piggott plays a pivotal role in supporting students through the notoriously difficult transition to tertiary mathematics, while convening and teaching some of ANU’s largest first-year courses.

Through a research-led approach to curriculum and assessment design, he guides students in finding their path to success. His use of innovative, authentic assessments highlights the practical utility of mathematics, inspiring students to see its relevance beyond the classroom.

In addition to his curriculum innovations, Piggott brings extraordinary enthusiasm and energy to his teaching. He has designed and implemented a dedicated orientation program for first-year mathematics students and is a constant presence in drop-in sessions and tutorials. His commitment fosters a welcoming and supportive environment that empowers ANU’s diverse community of first-year learners to thrive in mathematics.
