Associate Professor Riccardo Natoli
College of Health and Medicine
The School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP) and The John Curtin School of Medical Research
Riccardo Natoli is the Associate Director of Research Development at the School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP) and Head of Clear Vision Research at The John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR). Over the last decade he has created an environment for scientific learning and exploration focused on one core principle: ‘invest in people’.
Developing tailored and innovative supervision practices
This ‘invest in people’ principle emanates throughout all aspects of Riccardo’s group’s research endeavours in exploring the molecular basis for age-related macular degenerations, the number one cause of blindness in the western world.
In establishing this core principle at Clear Vision Research they have developed a reputation of being one of the most productive, innovative and sought-after research groups for students and staff at the ANU. Through providing opportunities to work alongside industry, healthcare, academia and people living with retinal degenerations, implementing an innovative student selection process and integrating student co-designed research projects, Riccardo strives to tailor the learning experience of the students to their career ambitions. He has created an inclusive, team-focused environment which attempts to encourage diversity of thought and has enabled students and staff to come to the ANU from across the globe. By engaging with students daily as equals, Riccardo is able to provide tailored supervision, counsel and advice. His mission is to empower everyone in his team, and beyond, to attain their career goals and maximise lifelong opportunities.
Riccardo is a consultative leader who utilises team building to create plans and make decisions. He embeds this in his supervisory style and believes the number one rule of consultative/collaborative supervision is effective communication. This involves being proficient in a combination of active listening and empathetic responses. Not all students will react to the same information in the same way and being able to understand how a student will respond to constructive, critical and actionable feedback in a timely manner is imperative for all student supervision. Riccardo prioritises the wellbeing of the students and staff, and where needed he plays a significant role in providing personal support, guidance and other resources to all members of his lab family.
[Professor Natoli] has worked with me to shape my research path to align with my interests and aspirations, encouraging me to collaborate with not only academic research labs but also industry leaders, providing opportunities rare for most PhD students. I have always admired his ability to bring together people to create a close-knit lab family, where everyone feels heard and valued.
