In Semester 2, 2023, ANU Careers and Employability collaborated with Legal Research and Writing (LAWS2248) classes to host a representative from the Law and Bills Digest Team from the Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) at four separate classes over two days. The exchange was very beneficial for both students and industry partners.

The DPS representatives presented on a range of job pathways, while sharing their individual professional stories and discussing the options for entry into their organisation. Students gained practical insights and industry-specific knowledge as well as exposure to professional experiences related to the course curriculum. The presentations also provided inspiration for students to consider alternative options for using their law degree.

Integrating employers and industry professionals into the Legal Research and Writing (LAWS2248) classes at ANU significantly benefited students’ education and career readiness.

At the time, the DPS had casual and part-time work available for law students – both an attractive hook for gaining student involvement and an incentive for industry to connect with ANU students. Students were able to ask questions and network with the representatives after the class to find out how to apply for the roles on offer.

The presentation reinforced an assessment piece that was already planned, directly linking the curriculum to real-world information provided by the department.

This semester, HazelBrook Legal, a local firm expert in corporate law, will also present as part of this course and the DPS will present again later in the semester.

These diverse areas of law give students practical insights into the influence they can have on these different areas of practice. Direct interaction with industry professionals allows students to build connections that can be positive for developing professional relationships. It also provides them with opportunities to showcase their skills and experience, while opening doors to internships, casual and part-time work, or graduate roles.

We invite ANU academics to collaborate with ANU Careers & Employability using this template as a model for integrating industry professionals into your courses. By partnering with employers, we can enrich our students’ educational experiences, enhance their career readiness, and create valuable networking opportunities. We are keen to work with you and to expand your students’ understanding of how their degree can be used in a range of jobs, so as to ensure they are well prepared for their professional futures.

Contact ANU Careers & Employability to discuss how we can bring these benefits to your classes and courses.
