Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Programs that Enhance Learning: The redesigned Bachelor of Arts

Highly Commended, Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Programs that Enhance Learning

The CASS Education Portfolio creatively re-designed the Bachelor of Arts from late 2023 to 2024, creating a more coherent and student-focused curriculum. The re-design was achieved in collaboration with disciplines across the college. The university’s Curriculum Framework project and the Bachelor of Arts review provided impetus for re-imagining the degree, but the Portfolio’s main priority was to clarify progression and to streamline offerings for students, who had raised concerns about the availability of courses listed on Programs and Courses.

The re-modelling future-proofed the Bachelor of Arts and built navigable pathways through the degree. It also decreased convenor workloads in an environment with declining resources. Maintaining and supporting the intellectual and creative foundations for each discipline in the college was vital.   As part of the process of re-design and streamlining, the Education Portfolio identified and reviewed existing courses that developed transdisciplinary skills and built on these offerings. The team also acknowledged existing strengths in Indigenous Knowledges and Perspectives and developed a plan for integration of Indigenous curricula and pedagogical methods.

The Education Portfolio consulted with all disciplines to strategically redesign majors, creating space and connections for interdisciplinary collaboration while maintaining and improving distinct and self-contained majors.
